Are you exempt from wearing a face mask or covering?

The law is quite clear on the wearing of face masks or face coverings on public transport and in shops.

You must wear a mask unless you have a reasonable excuse not to

Some people can’t wear a face mask or covering because of a disability or severe distress.

Not all disabilities are visible and you should not be questioned or interrogated about your reason for not wearing a face covering or mask, neither should you be discriminated against because of a disability which exempts you from wearing one.

Acceptable exemptions have been described as follows:-

  • Disability or health issues where wearing a mask could cause anxiety or distress
  • Breathing difficulties like COPD or Asthma
  • Autism
  • Those with Learning Difficulties
  • Those with Special Needs
  • Those who support people who rely on Lip Reading

To ensure that disabled people are protected from discrimination, harassment, or abuse, we have designed this exempt badge to help deal with public situations that might happen.
